DETOX YOUR BODY (From August 29th, 2006 show)

Success depends on what you choose to eat & drink during the detox.

 Foods to Avoid:

  1. Wheat – wheat bran can irritate the colon. Wheat protein (gluten) is difficult to digest & may cause bloating, constipation &/ or diarrhea. Gluten is present in oats, barley & rye to a lesser degree, so most people can tolerate them.

  1. Sugar & Salt – this would include convenience foods & products such as ready

meats, cookies, cakes & spreads. Sugar disrupts blood sugar levels.  Salt prevents fluid from being removed from your body.

3. Meats – creates extra work for your digestive system, especially red meat.

Fluids to Avoid:

  1. Cow’s milk products – milk increases mucus production in the body.

  1. Tea, Coffee, Chocolate & other Caffeinated Drink.  Caffeine is a diuretic & leads to dehydration.  As a stimulant, it stresses the body, deprives it of essential nutrients & prevents the body from absorbing vitamins & minerals.

  1. Alcohol – Containing sugar, it is broken down into a toxin in your body & free radical production in increased when alcohol is being metabolized. It also damages the liver, muscles & brain, & depletes your body of vitamins & minerals.

 Foods to Choose:

One key way to detox is to keep the body in an alkaline state.  The body’s acid-alkaline balance adjusts throughout the day depending on the type of food we eat.

Grains & proteins leave an acidic residue.  Fruits & vegetables leave an alkaline residue.  Grains & proteins are important for overall health, but balance them with a large amount of fruits & vegetables.

1.      Grains- such as brown rice, oats & barley are good choices.

2.      Proteins – such as nuts, seeds, dry beans, eggs & oily fish.

3.      Fruits & Vegetables – choose fresh, dried &  frozen.

Fluids to Choose:

  1. Water, Herbal Tea, Fruit & Vegetable juices.  Fluids help avoid retention & keep your body’s waste disposal systems – liver, kidneys, digestive system, lymphatic system & skin functioning efficiently.

  1. Drinking with meals dilutes digestive enzymes, so try to avoid drinking just before & up to an hour after meals.

Your detox should include Rest, Gentle Exercise, & Quiet Time.  No T.V., music, or even conversation.

This kind of detox can be done for a week every 2 or 3 months. Actually, it’s safe & nutritious, & can be used to give your digestive system a “rest”.  You  may want to try it on a week-end, Friday thru Sunday.
