The 2013 Zydeco Concert and Home Run Derby

The Opelousas area had another successful Home Run Derby and Zydeco Concert this year. Chief Perry Gallow and all of the Boys & Girls Club Board of Directors, staff and supporters did a great job of planning and executing both events. The Zydeco Concert has become an exciting part of the Home Run Derby. This year hundreds of people attended the Zydeco Concert and had the opportunity to watch Keith Frank and the Soileau Zydeco Band. The following morning spectators at the Home Run Derby were treated to a very exciting home run competition. It was especially fun to watch the childrens competition in the Kids Home Run Derby. Attendees at the Home Run Derby were also treated to a special appearance by former New Orleans Saints wide receiver  Devery Henderson.

Celebrity Waiter

We are so grateful for all of those who bought tickets to our 21st Annual Celebrity Waiter event to support our organization. The event is fun and entertaining and sells out every year. This year we had approximately 300 people attend.  The money raised from this event for the Boys & Girls Clubs has been increasing every year and this year it's at an all-time high. Every year District Attorney, Mike Harson presents a check to the Boys & Girls Clubs from money raised at his Annual Golf Tournament. This year he presented a check for $14,000.  Celebrity Waiter raised a net of $60,000, not including the $14,000 from District Attorney Mike Harson. This events success was the result of the Board of Directors, the staff and the volunteers. The money raised will help us continue to provide our youth with life enhancing programs and a safe place to learn and grow. Our kids and teens that attend the Clubs are the future and we strive to help them develop good character and  be successful in both life and business.

GB Teez Ribbon Cutting

"GB Teez" is the t-shirt screen printing business recently started by the Club teen members at the Boys & Girls Clubs. "GB Teez" was made possible by Capital One Bank's Investing for Good Award.  The Investing for Good Award is designed to spotlight the best direct service models that are serving people in need and building strong neighborhoods throughout Louisiana. The award will provide two years of grant funds and intensive volunteer support to build the capacity of area nonprofits to serve the needs of low-to moderate-income communities. The grant provides first year funding of $40,000; followed by a second year of funding of $20,000. This program encourages teen Club members to seek a business opportunity, develop a business plan, start a business, manage the business and receive the profits. The goal of this project is to create jobs for Boys & Girls Club teen members, and for the business to become self-supportive and turn profit.

There was a Ribbon Cutting for the new business at the Granberry Club.  We also added a page to our website for people to refer to when they need contact information.

Cox Ribbon Cutting

The Boys & Girls Clubs are extremely grateful and fortunate to have had a long time partnership with Cox Communications. This partnership has made it possible for the Boys & Girls Clubs Technology Centers. The Boys & Girls Club Technology Centers consist of state of the art computer equipment, including desktops, monitors, laptops, printers, docking stations, wireless routers, wireless cards, and proprietary Microsoft and Club Tech software.  In addition, Cox provides free high-speed Internet to Boys & Girls Clubs of Acadiana and nationwide within the Cox footprint.

"Our partnership with Cox Communications is important in today's society, where a child's success in life may be determined by exposure to technology. The computers and other assistance by Cox provide a means for Boys & Girls Clubs to close the technological achievement gap for many disadvantaged youth. We greatly value that partnership," said Chris Martin, Chief Professional Officer for Boys & Girls Clubs of Acadiana.

The technology centers are the centerpiece of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America Club Tech program, which provides students access to curriculum to advance their computer literacy skills. They also help bridge the gap for kids who have no access to a cell phone, computer or an Internet connection at home. The children can use the Technology Center computers to communicate with teachers, check grades, complete assignments and even print school reports.

This is the fourth Cox Technology Center Cox has donated to Boys & Girls Clubs of Acadiana since 2008. The 2013 donation is part of a $300,000 grant Cox Communications and the Cox Foundation provided for new technology centers located at 12 Boys & Girls Clubs across the country.

Opelousas Elks Lodge Fishing Derby at Catfish Heaven

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Acadiana recently received a $2,000 grant from the Opelousas Elk's Lodge #1048. The Boys & Girls Clubs purchased fishing rods for all of their members participating in the Fishing Derby. This event gave many of the members their first opportunity to experience the sport of fishing. This event put smiles on the faces of the participants and gave them a memorable experience and fish tales to brag about. The members used live bait to make their catch. After the day was over the members were able to take their rods home in case they would like to go fishing again. All Club members  receive a certificate for their participation. The fish were cleaned and bagged, so the members could bring them home for dinner. Trophies were made for categories such as the Biggest Catch, 3 Biggest Fish, Good Sportsmanship, Most Spirited Award and the Trash Fish Award. This opportunity provided the Boys & Girls Club members with skills they can use for the rest of their lives. The Fishing Derby will expose our youth to a safe, positive outlet that will give them positive options to occupy the extra time they may have. Through this event the Elks Lodge provided youth with exposure to positive activity, meaningful time with positive role models and one-on-one mentoring.

Christopher Eisenberg visits 2 of the Acadiana Boys & Girls Clubs

Boys & Girls Clubs of Acadiana hosted 2 events for Christopher Eisenberg. These events were part of his "Power of 15 Tour." During this tour he performed for Boys & Girls Club members across the United States. Chris Eisenberg is not your typical 15 year old young man.  Chris has a love and passion for performing that drives him to be successful in everything he does.  His passion is infectious and he has a remarkable way of leaving his fans inspired to follow their dreams and wanting more. His ultimate dream is to use his music to touch the hearts of the world and he is certainly on his way. Chris says, "It is important to me to keep telling other kids that they have the POWER to make a difference in their own lives and to make a difference in the Clubs and their communities.  I have been a Club member almost all of my life and I see so many kids that are so talented and passionate about something but they don't believe they can do it.  My main message to all kids is to NEVER be afraid to dream big and be POWERFUL in your pursuit of that dream.  Even if "15" members got together to do a project to help the community - "15" is a Powerful number." He appeared on the NBC show "America's Got Talent" Season 5.  He was selected as one of the top 48 finalists out of more than 70,000 auditions throughout the United States. Chris has many other huge accomplishments and plans on continuing his effort to make a change in the lives of Boys & Girls Club members and in the world.
